Finger tapping as a quantitative neurological measurement

Short motor tasks can yield interpretable features from routine clinical video.

Clinical question

Can video quantify separate components of motor impairment instead of relying solely on one ordinal clinical score?

Study design

The researchers examined 4,073 finger-tapping videos from 446 people with Parkinson’s disease, extracting interpretable measures such as movement speed, amplitude, sequence effects and hesitations.

What the researchers found

Video-derived features tracked several clinically defined motor characteristics and supported prediction of clinician-assigned finger-tapping severity. The authors highlighted a need for future work on sensitivity to treatment and progression.

Why this matters for MedMeters

MedMeters Neuro could focus first on transparent features—repetition count, amplitude, rhythm and within-session change—then validate against clinician ratings and longitudinal follow-up.

What this does not prove

This is external research, not permission to reproduce or commercialize the official MDS-UPDRS scale. Performance depends on task, recording quality and patient cohort; disease detection is not a claimed MedMeters feature.
